Tricks and dances with ropes as a game of dramatic tension. The artist engages in silent, yet theatrically expressive dialogues with her partners. The tone of the conversation changes widely: from quite friendly to sharply confrontational, from mocking to flirtatious.

09.30 Performance “Beasts are Restless”

In the darkness of the deep night, a young man is waiting for someone. Even through the walls of the apartment, hostile glances pierce. A cockroach, standing menacingly in the shadows, scratches its mustache. What are these nocturnal creatures that scratch at the door and yearn to get inside? Only the red eye of a cigarette shines in the darkness. He would much rather watch the reflections of the stars in the lake again, wander in the woods and indulge in free love. The young man is a composer who has quickly become widely known with his latest, radical composition and who now has to listen to the opinions of his supporters and critics. The central state newspaper condemns his composition – instead of musical chaos, the masses need something melodic and beautiful. This game could end badly.

Something similar was caused by an article in the central newspaper of the Soviet Union “Pravda” in 1936, something similar was experienced by composer Dmitry Shostakovich at a time when it marked a break between revolutionary avant-garde searches and stagnation imposed on art. However, the performance “Beasts are Restless” allows us to experience what it means to be young in a difficult era. It tells of the drive to create music and the process that a young person goes through, searching for their own voice, longing for the undefined and struggling with insomnia caused by fear. The creation of the performance is based on the testimonies of the era, life stories, literature and Shostakovich’s music research, as well as joint creative searches in the elephant stable of the Riga Circus and now also in the former Susēja School.

15.30 Lecture on vocal techniques in contemporary music

Mexican composer Diana Syrse is a Sansusī resident who studied contemporary vocal techniques in Los Angeles. In her lecture on the diversity of these techniques, she will focus on the singing traditions of different cultures around the world, compare them, and show how the voice can create very different sounds. Examples will be used to explain how these techniques have been incorporated into 20th-century and contemporary music.

16.00 Performance “Nearby Emptiness”

“Nearby Emptiness” is a dream-like collage of archetypal moods presented in the form of a performance. The focus of the work is being between two states – between destruction and renewal. Between change and movement from system to system, from order to order, from chaos to order and back to chaos, which moves like a spiral up and down and never stops. It is an eternal, sound-like movement somewhere in the void.
In 2017, the performance experienced a work process version called “Celies augsā, nāc man līdzi”.

16.30 Conversation with participants of the Sansusī residency

The so-called “Evart’s German Group” has returned to the “Sansusī” residency. Last year, in collaboration with volunteers, they created a performance sketch “Buried Whisper”. The residency participants were inspired by the festival, so this year they have come to work on a new idea for a musical theatre performance that will be created in the coming years. In a conversation that will conclude the residency, the artists will talk about what they have done during the week and how contemporary musical theatre is created.

Have you noticed that public transport is no longer running on schedule? In several apartments, the lights suddenly go out, and when they come back on, the kitchen walls are covered in a thick layer of saliva! Butterflies have started living in some books, and a snail the size of a cinnamon bun fell out of our janitor’s ear this morning. Do you think this is a coincidence? You are wrong. The Perturbon’s nest is to blame for everything! Perturbon is something even more mysterious and frightening than vaccines, worms in the stomach, and otitis media all at once. During the performance, KVADRIFRONS, together with the children, will try to find their missing friend and prevent the mischief caused by Perturbon. A performance for primary school children and their parents.

Composer Linda Leimane will synchronize festival visitors to the rhythms of forest dance, combining Belarusian dark slow techno, Canadian disco mantras, Latvian African drum ritual rhythms, rhythm patterns generated by computer algorithms, rural recordings, etc. She will be joined by poet and artist Artūrs Punte with laboratory magnetic mixers and other devices.

Opera singer Clara Pertuy takes the audience on new paths with her diverse and unheard voice. It is a voice that sings, whispers, growls, hisses, roars, growls and caresses. HALL07.

The dramatic architecture performance “HALL07” by the company “TAAT” (“Theater as Architecture, Architecture as Theater”) is a space as a theatrical event. The artists use materials from the festival surroundings and build a theatrical space in the open air, thus creating a new facet of the long-term “HALL33” project, which has already created six performative space installations in different countries and is planned to be completed in 2033.
