SALMON SONG
SALMON SONG together with Kuldīga | Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027 programme.
A new cultural and environmental initiative – “Salmon Song” – begins on the banks of the Venta River. It is a long-term vision to gradually establish a new cultural tradition in a place where nature is not merely a backdrop, but an active participant.
The project unfolds as a four-act dramaturgy, inviting the public to move from conversation to action and the creation of a shared tradition.
Act I – Invitation to dialogue (Spring 2026)
The public discussion “Spawning is not a buffet” will bring together local communities, environmental experts and artists to reflect on salmon spawning as a fragile natural process and on human responsibility.
Act II – Creating the place (2026)
An open call will invite architects and designers to develop a sustainable, site-sensitive stage structure on the riverbank.
Act III – First sound and action (October 2026)
The first concert in this new cultural territory will symbolically mark the transition from dialogue to action and the implementation of community-driven initiatives.
Act IV – The birth of a tradition (October 2027)
A cycle of three concerts over three consecutive weekends during the salmon spawning season will establish “Salmon Song” as an annual cultural event.
The initiative brings together concerts, discussions, co-creation processes and the development of a new performance space in nature.
Its aim is to create a platform where culture and nature become partners in dialogue.
If the Venta River matters to you – join the journey.
“The Salmon Song” is implemented within the framework of the programme “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027”, with funding provided by the Ministry of Culture, the City of Liepāja, and the municipalities of South Kurzeme and Kuldīga.
